When I was about 3 years old, my father made a tape (I’m dating myself) of me learning memory verses for Sabbath School ( the Seventh-Day Adventist version of Sunday school) and the one verse that I still here my 3 year old self quoting is Mark 14:8–“She hath done what she could”. When I think about the 4 years that president Obama has had and the trials and tribulations he has had to endure, it is no wonder that he became emotional while speaking at his last stop in Iowa before returning to his home in Chicago to find out if Americans can move “Forward” and continue the work that was started November 4th, 2008.
For the last 4 years, it has been well documented how the Republican Party has openly undermined Obama’s presidency regardless of how it affected our country and two days after Obama’s inauguration, Rush Limbaugh stated that he– “Wanted President Obama to fail”. That statement alone let all of America know that no matter how he and we may be able to help you, we are going to, as my momma used to say, “Cut off our nose to spite our face” and sit back and watch the show.
Unfortunately for them, they really did sit back and watch a show and the show was that of a man on a mission and it looked as if the mission was heaven sent because despite the roadblocks that were thrown his way, he managed to accomplish the following as listed on http://obamaachievements.org:
- Obama has overhauled the food safety system
- Advanced women’s rights in the work place
- Ended Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) in our military
- Stopped defending DOMA in court.
- Passed the Hate Crimes bill.
- Appointed two pro-choice women to the Supreme Court.
- Expanded access to medical care and provided subsidies for people who can’t afford it.
- Expanded the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
- Fixed the preexisting conditions travesty [and rescissions] in health insurance.
- Invested in clean energy.
- Overhauled the credit card industry, making it much more consumer-friendly.
- While Dodd-Frank bill was weak in many respects, it was still an extremely worthwhile start at re-regulating the financial sector.
- He created a Elizabeth Warren’s dream agency: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
- He’s done a lot for veterans
- He got help for people whose health was injured during the clean-up after the 9/11 attacks.
- He’s killed Osama Bin Laden
- Eliminated several other Al-Qaeda leaders
- Ended the War in Iraq
- Begun the drawdown of forces from Afghanistan
- End-run Republican obstructionism by recess-appointing Richard Cordray to run the Consumer Financial Protection Board.
If there is anyone out there who has ever been undermined at work when all you tried to do was show up and do your job, go back and read this list of accomplishments as a reminder of what a thankless job looks like. This list is the result of hard work and the kind of work expected of an american president so as we wake up today ready to cast our vote, let’s all remember what President Obama has accomplished in the face of adversity and if anyone asks what he’s done…just tell him–“He hath done what he could” and now it’s our turn.
Mitt Romney doesn’t want you to know this but he and the 47% have a lot in common. After watching a very painful press conference where Mitt tried to convince us that we didn’t hear what we heard, a few things popped into my mind and when he is heard saying on the video that the 47% feel entitled to receiving freebies from–“Health care, to food, to housing…that’s an entitlement…and the government should give it to them”, I was completely offended and I found it ironic that the “entitlements” Romney spoke of are the same exact entitlements the very rich tend to feel they are owed.
I was a banker for 13 years and I worked in an affluent community for 8 1/2 of those 13 years and what I learned in my 13 years of giving “superior customer service” to both the wealthy and middle to low-income customers is how similar the attitudes are of the very rich and the 47% Romney discussed in his leaked “off the cuff” (his words…not mine) remarks at a GOP fundraiser last May. When it comes to money and getting things for free there is a feeling of entitlement but the entitled tend to be the rich.
As a banker I learned the following; The rich expect that because they are allowing you to hold their money, all of their services should be or will be given to them free. The 47% expect that you will charge them for holding their money and while they may ask for some service fees to be waived the overall expectation is that there will be a charge and they budget in that charge as a “Cost of doing business”. So I find it interesting that the very people who truly feel entitled to free services are the very people who then turn around and try to shame you for daring to think like them.
This years presidential campaign has taken on an “Us vs. Them” mentality and it reminds me of the lords and the serfs I learned about in Junior High School. History teaches us where we’ve been and how we got there and the discussions that are being held today over the haves and the have nots are eerily similar to those of the Middle Ages and for those who don’t remember, that ended with the serfs revolting.
What we all witnessed last night was the game changer. Mitt Romney’s campaign has begun to self-implode before our eyes and even for those of us who already know we are voting to re-elect the President, it is never fun to watch a man fall from grace.
Mitt’s actions and inability to clearly articulate his agenda have left him looking like a bumbling idiot with a holier than thou attitude and to the 47% of us who don’t speak the language of the “Entitled Asshole”, the one line from Mitt that was very clear and understood by all was that it is, “Not his job to worry about the 47%” and he is right because that job belongs to the President of the United States and his name is Barack Obama!
In this weeks round up of “Gaffe’s by Mitt”, we find the GOP candidate struggling to find a consistent platform on which to stand and his achilles tendon, foreign policy, being thrown in his face…the man can’t catch a break! What I find most interesting is that Mitt’s strategy seems to be throw out everything and see what sticks and this is odd because he is running on his experience and acumen in the business world and yet he can’t seem to translate all of that “experience” into the kind of strategy one would expect from a former CEO of one the foremost management consulting firms in the world.
You can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps and the P.R. machine that Mitt Romney has enlisted to help him win the Presidency has shown that they know nothing about politics, nothing about diplomacy and I am beginning to think they know absolutely nothing about the very people he wants to represent.
After the bombing of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Romney missed his opportunity to show us his presidential chops by showing empathy and taking a moment to reflect and speculate on what the next steps should be and instead took the opportunity to launch a political attack on President Obama calling the Presidents response “disgraceful”.
In times of trouble, no matter how one feels politically, we, the American people, have always been able to come together with one voice. Romney’s inability to take this moment and find consensus with the president shows how ill-prepared he is to lead a nation such as the United States and one has to wonder if his vision of the United States is stuck in an era where all you had to do was show up in the boardroom and offer up a smile and a handshake?
Wherever Mitt is, it’s obvious that he isn’t in line with the American people and members of his own party. He seems to be showing signs of desperation and Mitt should know better than anyone that when a company is looking to hire from a viable candidate pool, they will most assuredly pick the candidate who shows grace under fire.
When George W. Bush was running for re-election in 2004, I had a customer, who was a registered republican and her case for George Bush’s being in office for four more years was–“We’re at war, he needs to be able to finish what he started.”
At the time, I was so over the lies that the world had been told about our reason from deviating from the original plan to find and bring to justice, Osama bin Laden, just so he could take revenge on Saddam Hussein and destroy his non-existent “weapons of mass destruction” that I found no reason to keep this man as the leader of our country. So fast forward four years and the country was in a complete tailspin, we hadn’t found Osama bin Laden and I wanted to ask–“How are those four years working for you?”
I always found it interesting that leaders of the republican party felt no responsibility for their actions that led us into the worst financial crisis in modern history and then turned around and wanted us to believe that Obama was somehow a failure because he didn’t “clean up” the mess they created in a timely manner…now that, to quote Bill Clinton, “Takes some brass!”
If we ask people to honestly assess what they’ve seen happen over the last four years and take “parties” out of it, I’m positive that there isn’t one person who actually believed that in four years time, anyone, let alone one man, could get us back to the way it was especially since where we’d been had a false bottom.
Why is it with public figures we expect more from them than we do ourselves? If this were you at (insert company name) and you were faced with rebuilding an office, you would expect to be given support and you’d be highly upset if no support was given and management walked in and laid all the blame at your feet as if they had no part to play in your failure.
I was brought in to manage an office that had been managed into the ground by the previous staff and when I was brought in to do an “Obama” and clean it up, they instructed me to go in and get rid of the dead weight, hire replacement for said dead weight, bring the office back to code and oh, do all this and maintain goals and grow the office all while giving superior customer service! Being naive about what I was walking into, I thought that by doing what I was supposed to do, I’d receive the support that would enable me to successfully clean up and manage my office…it didn’t happen.
I covered my end of the bargain but was left high and dry and I received no support from upper management and because of the lack of support, I and my office were unsuccessful. When they talked to me about why I was unable to perform at a satisfactory level, I was completely incredulous at their ability to talk to me as if they were completely devoid of culpability. Apparently, their job ended when they put me in office…I wish someone had informed me. I eventually was able to turn my office around but it took time and teamwork and it wasn’t until everyone realized their role that we were able to accomplish the original goal.
It’s time for the citizens of this country to stop listening to outside forces and start to think for themselves. President Obama has worked tirelessly to turn this country around and whether you agree with his policies or not, you cannot deny that what he has faced has never been seen before in the history of the United States and he has faced it head on, with little to no support. So when I’m asked if Obama should be in office another four years, my response will be–“Bush got a second chance and didn’t accomplish what he said he’d do, Obama accomplished what Bush couldn’t in his first term…seems obvious to me!”
Has anyone else noticed that the only people who have been blessed with the parent gene seem to be members of the Republican Party? Since the 2008 Presidential election, they have been on this “We’re better than you because we have our babies” kick and I am so over it! The 2008 elections was the first election, in a long time, where EVERYONE had something to say and being a banker inside a grocery store, my counter was like the town watering hole.
The conversation that really got everyone going at the time was the nomination of Sarah Palin as John McCain‘s Vice Presidential running mate and when questions about whether she was qualified to be the Vice Presidential nominee came up, the answer from anyone who was republican or undecided was–“Well, she has 5 kids…” What? That had to be the most asinine response I had ever heard.
It became evident very quickly that because she didn’t have a true record to stand on, the only record she did have that was of any consequence was her record as a mother. Sarah Palin did the unthinkable and gave birth to 5 children…so that was all it took for you to be considered a qualified candidate for Vice President of the United States of America? Well we all know that the answer is “Yes“.
It was then that I realized the republican strategy…harp on her success at having given birth (like that’s unique) because that will correlate with our pro-life stance and voila…a platform is born! By the end of that campaign, I was so tired of hearing about the phenomena of giving birth 5 times and that, somehow, being a qualification to run for V.P. of the United States.
They convinced themselves that her managing to give birth 5 times was some kind of feat and not one that millions of women manage every year. To those who used the ability to breed as validation, I would always reminded them that what she’s “accomplished” has also been “accomplished” by plenty of welfare recipients, just to put everything into perspective…they didn’t like that.
Listening to how wonderful they were because they “valued” family was offensive and disrespectful to all the rest of us who “valued” our families and human rights. Somehow we were less american because we chose not to embrace their republican ideology…it pissed me off!
As the 2012 presidential election approached, it became obvious that they were going to stick to the same strategy and this time the poster child for being a great breeder (I mean republican) was Ann Romney. She, like Palin had done the impossible and given birth…wait for it… 5 times and along with her successful businessman husband, they were perfect to perpetuate the “We’re wonderful because we give birth” spin.
The Republican Party has, very irresponsibly, cornered themselves into the proverbial corner with their obscure stance on family and how their choices make them not only the better choice but better people…sounds like Hitler to me!
As a parent of two children (amazing…a democrat who chose to give birth!) who has never thought of aborting and loves and values family, the divisive rhetoric the party is spewing is doing nothing more than divide the very country they claim to love so much (It sounds like the parenting style comes with conditions).
Republicans will continue to spin their story of “Great parents are republican” but they will never be able to convince me that I wasn’t born with the parenting gene because I have the stretch marks to prove it and I dare them to tell me otherwise!
All over the news this morning, Republicans were crying about the fact that more attention is being paid to now Hurricane Isaac than the Republican Convention and the nomination of Mitt Romney for President. With Hurricane Isaac poised to hit New Orleans on the Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and with the devastation Hurricane Katrina caused still in our memories, political shock jock, Rush Limbaugh, claiming that the government and more specifically, Obama, have somehow rigged a natural disaster to conveniently hit just in time to rain on the RNC‘s parade shows more and more the extremes they will go to create a conspiracy where there is none.
Obama is so powerful that he was able to summon a hurricane just in time to interrupt the Republican National Convention? All the more reason I should vote for him…the man is connected! I believe Rush’s statements solidify Whitney Houston’s famous quote “Crack is whack” but it’s Rush so insert oxycontin for crack.
The cancellation of Monday’s opening ceremonies at the RNC has obviously taken the wind of the their sail and it reminds me of episode 312 of Mad Men when Roger Sterling‘s daughter’s wedding is upstaged by the assassination of President Kennedy. That is exactly what has happened with the RNC. They have been upstaged and find themselves once again, stripped of any power…and we all know how Republicans respond to loss of power!
While I don’t know anyone who would wish a natural disaster would be the reason the RNC has less of a stage to showcase their ideology I do have to agree with Rush Limbaugh when he said–“…when you put this all together in this timeline, I’m telling you, it’s unbelievable!” and it is unbelievable because it seems even the Lord is looking to silence Republicans.
Does anyone remember when I wrote Think Before You Speak…well Cory Booker is learning how to do that. Newsmax reported that Mr. Booker, the “Super Mayor” of Newark, N.J., has been “sidelined” by President Obama’s campaign re-election team. His benching stems from his May, 20 interview on Meet the Press where he said he found the attacks on Romney’s record at Bain Capital “nauseating”.
While Mayor Booker wasn’t wrong for his thoughts, going on a national television show and openly questioning “the coach” seemed like a rookie move to me when it happened. If he were playing in any championship game, had he questioned his coach on the sideline, everyone would have been up in arms and would have been happy to see him fined or benched for a game or two. So why would it be any different for the Commander in Chief who is fighting to keep his job?
Cory is learning something my mother said a lot. “Don’t question me in public.” For her generation, it was considered to be rude and there is a level of respect that should be given to anyone whether they are your elder or your employer. You don’t have to agree with what they are saying but there is a time and a place to express your opinion and in front of the world, on a televised talk show, may not have been the ideal time and place to say what was on your mind.
As for Cory, he has lamented that there are “lessons to be learned” and he is going to be more “careful” when choosing his words. This has to be a hard lesson for a rising star in the Democratic Party but at least he learned it early and I’m sure that he will find his way back into the good graces of the Democratic Party…but they are going to make him work!
